Keeping Older Loved Ones Engaged, Independent, And Included In Your Family

May is designated as Older Americans Month. It raises awareness of the contributions made by people over 65, as well as some of the common challenges they face. This year’s theme is ‘Aging Unbound’ and focuses on ways to keep older adults engaged, independent, and included in your family. Our Tampa elder care attorney highlights several areas of concern and practical steps you can take.

Protecting The Independence of Older Adults

According to recent US Census Bureau reports, close to 13 percent of Tampa residents are over the age of 65. Older Americans Month helps to focus on some of the common issues they face. One of the most important is how to protect their independence.

Most older adults are proud of their ability to do things on their own. However, the aging process can leave them vulnerable. During Older Americans Month, take the time to address common issues that could make them more reliant on others. These include:

  • Their health care needs: While most older adults prefer to remain in their own homes, health conditions may make nursing home care more practical. Discuss whether they require more intensive treatment and ways this could be provided at home, such as through visiting nurses.
  • Mobility issues: The risk of personal injuries increase as we age and one of the ways they commonly occur is in household accidents. Assess whether it is safe for older adults to live on their own and whether using a walker or installing handrails throughout the dwelling is an option.
  • Performing everyday tasks: Older adults often reach a point where they have difficulty performing even simple daily tasks, such as cleaning, making meals, and attending to their personal hygiene. Service providers within the community can help in these areas.
  • Transportation issues: Slower reflexes, reduced coordination, and decreased vision or hearing can pose serious hazards for older adults and others on the road. Assess driving skills and whether other transportation options are available, such as buses or getting rides from family or friends.

Putting Other Estate Planning Protections In Place

Money may be a major concern with older adults, both in terms of obtaining at-home services or  nursing home care. Creating a trust can help with Medicaid planning and helps to offset these expenses.

Older Americans Month also provides the opportunity to address other important estate planning needs older adults have. These include:

  • Creating a will, which can help to prevent costly probate court proceedings;
  • Determining when a guardianship may be needed;
  • Naming someone to act as their power of attorney and healthcare advocate;
  • Putting a living will and other advance directives in place.
